The Grand National will reduce its field to 34 horses as part of a slew of significant changes, taking effect from next year, in an effort to make the world’s most famous steeplechase safer for horses and jockeys. Other changes include softening the fences by using foam and rubber toe boards, and moving the first fence closer to the start to stop horses building up too much speed. The race will also start earlier in the day, so the course stays as soft as possible, and the horses will set off from a standing start. The Grand National has had a field of 40 horses since 1984, which has often been cited — along with the size of the fences — as a key reason why 16 horses have died in the race since the turn of the century. "Racing is the same in that we have to evolve to ensure the future of the sport.”The 2024 Grand National takes place on April 13.

An American Bully XXL is pictured at a veterinary clinic in Utrecht, Netherlands June 20, 2023. He said a man was killed on Thursday in central England in an attack involving a suspected XL bully dog. According to campaign group Bully Watch, which advocates for a ban on selling and breeding large XL bully dogs, the breed was responsible for more than half of all fatal dog attacks in Britain last year. XL bully dogs were originally bred from American pit bull terriers and American Staffordshire terriers and first appeared in the UK "around 2014 or 2015", with the numbers growing rapidly in recent years, the campaign group said. Sunak has asked the police and experts to define XL bully dogs, a first step he said before he hopes they can be banned by the end of the year.

CNN —Warming global temperatures are dangerous for people in many ways, but they’re proving ideal for one type of animal: venomous snakes. As Australia’s east coast experiences one of its warmest winters on record, snake season appears to have started early. The Australian Reptile Park has issued an “urgent warning” for people to be on the look out for venomous snakes. A rise in temperatures, coupled with winter rainfall, is the perfect environment for venomous snakes to become more active, the Australian Reptile Park said in a statement. As the world continues to burn planet-warming fossil fuels, and global temperatures soar, Australia’s winters have been steadily warming.
